A building can welcome or intimidate, sometimes making the visitor feel important or insignificant. Some edifices exercise aesthetic, even religious, powers. One remarkable building that evokes all of these responses - and others, as well - is the second Shaker Meetinghouse at Mount Lebanon, New York, built between 1822 and 1824, at a time when the Shaker village shared the name New Lebanon with its closest neighboring town. The Meetinghouse survives today amid a collection of other Shaker-built structures on a hillside overlooking farms and the reforested acreage of still-rural Columbia County. Travelers who wander off U.S. Route 20 onto the old Pittsfield-Albany Road find that the building commands their attention, even at the end of the 20th century.
